"I dared greatly. I was brave. I got my butt kicked and now I'm down for the count. How do I get back up?"

This is a program based on the research of Brené Brown designed to acknowledge, name, address, and heal the shame we encounter every day in medical life, often starting well before the medical school application process.

The constant sense of being "not-enough" - not smart enough, not fast enough, not skilled enough, not organized enough, not seeing enough patients, not keeping up with charting enough- the list goes on and on.

Addressing work-life balance seems ridiculous in light of the constant uphill battle just to keep showing up as we toss aside our own unmet needs.

When things don't work out as we planned, we make up stories as to why we "failed" and who is to blame. These stories may not be true.

It's not that we need to be "better"or perfect. Rather, we need to be taught and gain confidence in the skills of shame resilience: how to cope when we feel bad about ourselves, our humanness.

The Rising Strong™ process helps us get to our own truth, the emotions we're feeling or avoiding, the feelings we have ABOUT our feelings, and how to heal ourselves.

I used to think having a "wholehearted life" was reserved for people outside of medicine. Now I know we have to be the ones to create that possibility and settle for nothing less. Having the courage to reckon with our emotions and rumble with our stories is the path to wholeheartedness.

This work is powerful and transformative, not only for those working in medical life. The wisdom and shame resilience gained through this course can be passed onto families, communities, patients, future practitioners, and the planet, so we can get back to our original ideals and be the revolution needed to heal the world.
